As an avid griller myself I love having a group of family or friends over for a backyard cookout. But what’s really embarrassing is when the gas tank goes empty right in the middle of cooking.

I’ve finally learned to keep 2 tanks on hand for the summer, but I’d be lying if I told you I ran out of propane only once. It’s actually happened several times.

The largest cost of grilling is the propane gas that is used to fuel the grill. There are places near you to get your propane tank filled without paying the expense trade-in fees most gas stations and big-box stores offer.

I don’t know about you, but when my tank needs to be changed I always get the feeling that I’m getting ripped off.

So where can you get your propane tank refilled?

Propane Refill Stations Are Closer Than You Think?

If you run a search on Google for ‘Propane Refill Station’ you will find several places near you.

A propane refill station will refill your tank for approximately 1/2 of a tank exchange box at your local gas station.

Depending on your location you might be near:

  • U-haul
  • AmeriGas
  • Tractor Supply
  • RV Camps
  • Local Equipment Rental Store
  • Menards
  • Truck Stops like Flying J and Love’s
  • Local Hardware like Ace

I keep a list of local propane dealers and their prices posted on the inside of my grill. This way I can fill up as soon as my tank is low.

Prices do vary based on location and current propane pricing.

Tank Replacement

If you don’t want to lug your empty tank around hunting for a gas refill then tank replacement stations are a quick and easy option.

The #1 reason you will want to replace your tank instead of refill it is safety.

  • You will receive a reconditioned, tested tank.
  • The propane valve is certified and tested. (the valve most important part of your tank)
  • A new tank looks great with your nice clean grill.

Tank replacement stations can be found at most gas stations and big-box stores, but your best option to find a new propane tank is to search online.
